Program Overview

MUUS has two programs for children and young people: the Nursery and Religious Education classes. The Nursery is open and the religious education classes run from the second Sunday in September through the Sunday before Memorial Day in May.

Nursery

All infants and children from birth to five years of age are invited to attend our nursery during the Sunday Service. The nursery is located at the back of the sanctuary. Our nursery attendant, Molly Hubenthal, is available to provide a nurturing and safe environment for our youngest members and visiting friends. Any parent wishing to stay in the nursery with his or her child is welcome to do so.

Religious Education Classes

Religious Education classes are for children and youth ages 5 through 18. All Religious Education classes are held in the upper level of the meetinghouse. Children and youth attend the Sunday service with their parents for approximately the first 15 minutes, until the children are "sung on their way" to class.

Curriculum

The MUUS RE program runs on a four-year curriculum cycle. In the first year of the cycle, the curriculum focus is Unitarian Universalist identify. In Year 2, the children and youth study world religions. Judeo-Christian Heritage is the focus of Year 3. In Year 4, the curriculum focus is social justice. The the cycle begins again. Each class uses different curriculum materials based on the age range of the children. The 2005-2006 curriculum focus is world religions. The age grouping and curricula are:

Beatrix Potter Group (Kindergarten through Second Grade)

This class will use the Unitarian Universalist curriculum, Holidays and Holy Days, as well as other supplemental materials.

Thoreau Group (Grades 3 through 5)

This class will use a variety of materials to study world religions, including How Do You Spell God?, One World, Many Religions, and Sacred Myths.

Emerson Group (7th Grade and Up)

Our MUUS youth will be working with the UUA curriculum, Neighboring Faiths. They will be studying other religions and visiting other houses of worship in our community.
